FIRST - SUPPLYING HEALTHY FOOD
By giving $80 per week, St. Simon pays for 1000 children to have a weekly fruit and vegetable as part of their school meal.
SECOND - BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS
Missionary trips and phone calls provide an opportunity to build our relationship with the Sisters and children of our twinned school.
THIRD - GIVING AN EDUCATION
Tuition payments from American sponsors help familities in the poor Port-au-Prince, Haiti, neighborhood of Cite Militaire send their children to school.
FOURTH - PROVIDING OPPORTUNITY
400 children as young as age five attend afternoon school at no cost. St. Simon sponsors one older student. Nesseyole Bastien is studying to be a hospital nurse.
FIFTH - IMPROVING SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT
For the past 15 years, additional funds from St. Simon have improved the school from the first doors and windows to a two-story junior high school. Repairs from the 2010 earthquake are continuing. The rebuilt bathrooms await completion of a new $36,000 well.
SIXTH - IMPROVING CURRICULUM
Haitians' hope for the future is in education. Junior High students learn Spanis, French and science. A library and computer lab are available. Some students attend a trade school where skills such as cooking and sewing are taught.
SEVENTH - IMPROVING LIVES
Immediately after the 2010 earthquake, the Salesian Sister provided food and security to the nearby devastated families. Some families with no money to rebuild remain in the school soccer field. In 2011, St. Simon church collected $13,000 to build 5 new homes. In 2012, St. Simon Twinning Program plans to bring prescription eyeglasses to the students.
